World's Most High Tech Electric Shaver - Does it Deliver?

After reviewing many electric shavers I've learned one important fact: it all comes down to shaving performance.

Now, this may seem like pretty common sense but let me explain.

Firstly, with new high tech designs and advanced features, it's easy to get caught up with choosing a shaver based on other, less important things.

Secondly, how do you measure shaving performance? Do you calculate it based on shaving specs, or do you rely on other consumer reviews?

To be honest, it's not always that easy. How do you know if a 360 degree pivoting head actually gives a smoother shave? Or, how do you judge a terrible consumer review against a bunch of 5/5 star ratings?

Fortunately, I've reviewed many of the top selling brands and although I'm only a sample size of one, I do have quite a bit of experience.

So the question is, does high tech equal good shaving performance?

To answer this questions we will quickly discuss one of the more high tech shavers from Philips Norelco: The SensoTouch 3D Shaver

Shaving Specs that Work!

The first thing you'll notice on this shaver is the unique design of the shaving head.

Like all Norelco shavers this is a rotary shaver, however the 3 rotary heads protrude out of the top of the shaver creating a completely unique design. The shaving head pivots 360 degrees allowing you to reach all the contours of your face.

By looking at the design of this shaver, and because I've tested it out, I can tell you that this feature does improve shaving performance. The pivoting head allows you to reach areas of your face easier than some other designs. What this ultimately leads to is less time shaving, and thus less chance of irritation.

This is a feature found in many of the high end shavers. A pivoting head, whether it's on a rotary shaver or a foil shaver will improve the shaving performance, and therefore is a positive use of technology in these products.

Some SensoTouch 3D models come with a cleaning station which is also very high tech.

With one push of a button the shaver actually lowers into the cleaning liquid to be cleaned. It is then raised back up so it can dry off before your next shave. Overall it's probably the coolest cleaning station on the market.

The cleaning stations are generally worth the added cost because cleaning your shaver is very important. So in this sense the technology involved in creating a cleaning station for these shavers is worth it.

Again, this is true for the SensoTouch 3D shavers, as well as models from Braun and Panasonic. They all tend to have well designed cleaning stations.

So far these high tech features are leading to an improved shaving performance. A pivoting head makes shaving easier, and a cleaning station makes cleaning more convenient.

With these two features, high technology does deliver.

Features Which Aren't Needed

Unfortunately, there are a few features which aren't that special.

Normally this wouldn't be a concern, however sometimes the price difference between models which have these "not so great" features and those that don't can be quite high, so it's worth mentioning in order to hopefully save some people a bit of money.

The features that you generally don't need are: Improved digital display, longer shaving time, quicker charging time, chrome vs. black finish, fancy traveling case and so on.

These features don't improve the shaving performance like a pivoting head, or a cleaning station does, and therefore if the price difference between two models is quite high, choose the cheaper model because you don't need these features.

So a typical example would be between the SenoTouch 3D 1250 xcc and the 1280 xcc. They both come with a cleaning station, however the 1280 xcc has a chrome finish, digital display, and a luxury traveling case. For an extra $100, these features are an example where high technology doesn't deliver.

Bottom line, decide if you want to buy the models which come with a cleaning station, then make price the next most important factor. This should help you make the most of the useful technology, and avoid paying for the stuff you don't need.
